It's totally commonplace to be called 'maestro' in Italy -- and it's an
Italian word, after all. You're called it if you're giving someone a
lesson, for example. And anyone with any musical authority whatever
might well be addressed as 'maestro' by a non-musician, too.

I've forgotten which violinist extraordinaire it was that Nigel Kennedy
was studying with in Italy when the following incident occurred, but the
story has it that Nigel came in one morning and addressed a cheery "Buon
giorno!" to the gentleman in question.

"Buon giorno, *maestro*," came the correction.

"Oh!" said Nigel, and then proceeded to go round the entire class,
saying "Buon giorno, maestro," to everyone present, finishing with a
final, still cheery, "Buon giorno, *maestro*!" to the teacher.
