I was asking about this very thing at Guy Chadash's
workshop the other day. When Guy makes the lower joint
for a basset clarinet, he takes a lower joint from an
A clarinet (an additional joint from the one that is
being used for regular playing,) cuts the bottom 1/4
off (above the E, and adds an extension permanently
for it. He was telling me that the bottom joint is
cylindrical to the bell in his manufacturing process.
