And it was 50 years ago that I first played under Fennel at some kind of
a New England band function held at the Univ. of Massachussetts. He
spoke about the new group that he had formed and how the ideas for it
germinated in his head while he was hospitalized.

Up to that time, my idea of a good band piece was the Lustspiel Overture
and the first thing that Fennell pulled out was Schuman's George
Washington Bridge followed by the Persichetti Divertimento. I had an
epiphany that weekend, I can tell you!!!!

And Fennell and I have remained friends ever since. If you will look at
his edition of K. 361, you will see that he was very generous is
thanking me for bringing a lot of ideas about that piece to his
attention. But exactly the reverse is true. It was he who introduced
me to that work, something for which I will be eternally grateful.
