In general, a closed tip requires a stiffer reed than an open
tip. Relatively closed tips are generally used for classical and concert
playing. Open tips are more popular for jazz, allowing greater flexibility
of intonation. All of this is relative, however. A closed tip with a
short facing will need a softer reed than one with a long facing and
vice-versa. For example, the Vandoren B-45 is relatively open, but has a
long facing, averaging out to medium for reed strength requirements. Try
as many as you can in stores, borrowing from friends, etc. Be sure to
include the Woodwind K10M which gives a nice, full sound, at least for me,
with reeds in the 3 1/2 to 4 range. It is the standard mouthpiece with
Leblanc's better clarinets, and is relatively inexpensive as pro hard
rubber mouthpieces go.

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is TOO LOUD!
