Dan,

We needed some electronic instrumentation cases several years ago, and
went to a place in Denver (off I-70) that specialized in making custom
cases. The cases were similar to the Anvil cases for musical instruments
- semi-hardshell, aluminum angles reinforcing all edges, steel corners,
steel hinges and latches, rollers if you want them, steel handles. Sized
to fit your gear. Foam inside cut to size so that what you slide in
cannot move around. In general, what's inside is WELL protected.

Downsides - they're not cheap, they're heavy, and they can be bulky. And
no leather. I don't know whether they would do felt or velvet lining; we
didn't need that in our application.

Unfortunately, I don't remember the name of the vendor, but I'll do some
looking and post if I come up with it. However, the nature of the beast
is such that people doing this kind of work can likely be found in any
major city.
