I myself use regular rubber earplugs attatched by a cord, so I can just hang
them around my neck for easy access. You can find these at any place that
sells guns (!!!).

There is a brand of 'musician's' ear plugs that advertises in the Union
Paper. Among their endorsees are most of the Chicago Symphony Bassoon
section. I would say that's a pretty fine endorsement! The bassoon stands in
some major orchestras should have a warning sign: "DANGER, BLASTING ZONE."
This more than occasionally spills over into the clarinet section, of course.
