I have used the North Sonic II hearing protectors. These are generally found
in music stores, although they can be used for other purposes as well. It
has a small valve which allows some sound to get through, but apparently
cuts down on the intensity and harmful frequencies. I have also known of
players to get custom made protection made to fit each individuals ears.

Sometimes I think the wind and string sections should get those large
headphone style protectors that you see the guys using on airport runways.
Of course that would only encourage the brass and percussion even more!
