While this probably does not apply to Ormandy, in my experience, a circular
beat generally means the conductor has lost his place in the score!

You sure are right Bill!!!!! Ormandy was a mess at times. I was in a
training orchestra with the former Concertmaster of Phila. and he was
givingus amusing stories of how oblivious Ormandy was at times - like when
the soloist stopped playing and Ormandy suddenly realized that he had lost
his soloist about a page earlier. The circles were "I'm lost, but I'll try
to find myself before this piece ends". ;)
