A late reply to Dave Blumberg: Ormandy often conducted with a circular
beat - particularly in rapid tempi. Orchestra members had to pick the
spot to signal a downbeat depending upon their seat location and
perspective (standing or sitting.). In conducting classes at Temple we
were forbidden to use his style. In fact, I've come around to the theory
that only professional guest conductors "need" really clear
beats. Resident conductors have much more time to get the message across
and really only need to cue points of emphasis.
