Imigration officials at New York [Kennedy] gave a traveller from London a
very hard time recently for having an orange in her possession. In fact he
threatened to put her on a return flight.
I think a traveller entering the USA would be wise to remove any orange peel
in use and on entry to the USA replace it with the native version.
I have just returned from a week in Long Beach where I attended a conference
at which the 91 year old Artie Shaw treated us to an hour long
uninterruptable monologue during which Goodman, DeFranco, Herman, Kenny G,
and the klezmer clarinetists each got a mention, none in a very positive
fashion, though he did admit that at long last DeFranco was beginning to get
the message.
Only the fact that he had to go to sign some autographs at the Tower Records
prevented him continuing. [I took about 6 or 7 informal photos of him, in not
one had he his mouth closed!]
