Myke,

Couldn't you just *lower* the key signature a half
step (like C to B) and play the notes where they are
written on a Bb clarinet, but as if the clef was Bass
clef? (adjusting for accidentals that have to be
changed for the key, of course.) The alto clef C is on
the third line, which would be a D in Bass clef, thus
the transposition. The lowest note would be a D
concert, and I don't believe a viola plays lower than
that. This would be the CHEAPEST option for playing
viola parts.

You could also just buy a D clarinet, and *raise* the
key signature a whole step (like C to D) and play the
alto clef as if it was the treble clef. I would think
the D clarinet would be a whole lot easier to get than
a basset extension for C clarinet, and the instrument
would play down to a low F# concert pitch (written E
natural.)

Just a suggestion (or two.)
