Yet ANOTHER orange peel post:

Notes by Hans Moennig in "A Clarinetist's Notebook, Vol. I", by Robt.
Schmidt, indicated that one should put a "small open mouth medicine bottle
with moist cotton in the case" if the weather is cold and the instrument
can't be played for a number of days." This seems to imply that he didn't
think you should need to use a means of adding moisture if you are playing
the instrument every day. (He advised playing every day in the winter months
even if it was only for 5 minutes.) Schmidt added for the second edition
that Moennig "now uses orange peels. Be sure to change peels when they dry
out. If the peels become moldy, there probably is sufficient moisture
without them." He (Moennig) also provided precise instructions for breaking
in new instruments in order to avoid the cracking caused by playing dry and
cold instruments.
