SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Symphony, only recently recovered from bankruptcy,
announced Friday it will receive $100 million from Qualcomm founder Irwin
Jacobs, the largest single donation ever granted to a U.S. orchestra.
The donation brings financial security to the 80-member symphony, which
until now had an endowment of just $1 million and went bankrupt in 1996,
forcing it to halt performances for two-and-a-half years.
"When you think there was no orchestra playing on our stage four years ago
... to have an endowment coming that will rival the great orchestras in the
country, I know of no other story like it," said Doug Gerhart, president and
CEO of the symphony.
