Two hours a day for all levels... you have to be kidding! Quality, not
quantity is the order to the day if you happen to have a non-music job, a
wife and a baby with noctural screaming habits. I'd suggest that once a
basic level of playing is achieved, maintainance practice is required to
prevent one from going backwards, but as little as ten minutes of focussed
daily practice will be much more valuable than a lot longer if you aren't
focussed. Surely this (quality not quantity) is a general rule.

Good Questions!

Motivational techniques...well I know this probably isn't the best one, but
it does work for me: I just imagine all the other young talented high school
clarinetists, and tell myself "THEY'RE ALL PRACTICING, GET OFF YOUR BUTT,
HOW BADLY DO YOU WANT THIS?" That works pretty well. If I'm in a really bad
mood I go get a carvel choclate ice cream cake, eat it (sometimes the whole
thing). Then brush my teeth and go back to practicing.

I guess you need to practice as much as you need to practice...and most
people can figure this out. I think a two hour minimum for all levels is
reasonable...but maybe less or more depending on the individual.
