In the year I was in on the Field band auditions the number one reason people didn't make the finals or got the job was articulation. There seems to be a general lack of teaching a "clean" staccato let alone one that's fast enough. We could always tell when someone was trying to get the "Darkest" of all posible tone colors, the first thing we would trough at them was the little bouncy part in " Force of Destiny". There were always people showing up with a reed that was way to hard to really play. And the thing that always amazed me, no matter how many clarinetist showed up, there was really only one who could actually " cut " the job. I have a philosopy about certain " Articulated" excerpts. If the promptor doesn' ask you to do it again slower it didn't do it fast enough. This only works for military Band auditions!!
