Stay away from any of those drugs (ie. beta blockers) that promise to
calm your nerves. Instead, stay away from caffine at least a week
before (the withdrawl is almost as bad as the effect) and if you want
to take something to calm your nerves, eat a banana at breakfast that
morning, or if you're like me and they don't always agree with you,
I've found a banana "Powerbar" produces nearly the same effect.
(Something about the potassium, but I haven't really read into it,
all I know is it works for me) Another tip is to be comfortable
playing at your audition time in the days before. Each moment of the
day has a different feeling. For me, playing in the morning is much
different than playing in the evening. (for example, in the morning I
have to push my muscles to move faster, in the evening I have to slow
them down to stay in control) And one more thing, try to avoid
physical exertion just before, or during the audition. For example,
if someone is leading you to the audition room, follow them at your
own pace. (Don't let their being behind schedule give you a sense of
being rushed) And if you have to change rooms during the audition (as
I was unfortunately made to do once) again take your time.

I hope some of this rambling helps!

Mike
