I"m surprised that nobody has mentioned Melody Assistant yet. $15
shareware, with FREE updates, and it does pretty much everything that most
people would need it to do, including MIDI. It can be found at:

http://www.myriad-online.com/

The program's features are far too numerous to mention, but the unlicensed
version is restricted only in the number of notes you can place in a
document. I must say, though, that it's among the best $15 I've ever spent.
..support is flawless, upgrades are, as I mentioned, free (not to mention
regular). Also, the program's authors are very responsive to feedback. And
for my fellow Mac zealots out there, yes, we do have a version as well. In
fact, you can even get a 68K version! There is also a Mac OS X-native
version--and my same serial number from three years ago on the regular PPC
version works for it! I think you'll find it to satisfy most needs. And no,
I'm not working for these guys or anything :)
