I just received an email from Guy Chadash about the gap.
He said: "The gap you noticed is not intended but in machining lingo it is a tolerance on the plus side the affect or side affect will be the lowering of the 12th, in the right hand such as F, E, F# due to the increase of total volume.

I guess having a small gap is good (between the upper and lower joints) if your middle clarion range is sharp and the clarinet is not wobbly.
