I, too, have noticed this gap. I often exists at the other joints as well.
It is often so bad between the bottom of the barrel and the top main joint
that the insertion of a one mm tuning ring will actually sharpen the throat
tones!

As a professional machinist I know the cause of these gaps: CRAPPY QUALITY
CONTROL.
