Well, "total waste" is I think a little strong, although it is certainly
VERY limited. We have a lot of students in grades 6-9 using it quite
successfully to create very simple composition projects in one of our middle
schools. We are in the process of buying more sophisticated software now
that we've finally gotten a budget allocation for it. But on the chance that
it may be all the original questioner needs, he can't hurt anything by
trying it (at no cost). If he (or anyone else) runs up against Notepad's
limits too soon or too hard, the other programs will still be available.

I myself use both Finale and Sibelius and couldn't work without the bells
and whistles they offer, but Notepad may be all some simple projects
require.
