1. If you know where he is, contact him and ask what's up.
2. Verify that it is a correct note as copyists and publishers have been
known to commit little boo-boo's to perpetuity where everyone trys to
play the wrong note without question.
2. Was it written for an A bass clarinet then transposed?
3. The cardboard tube trick works as it 'extends the tube'. If you
could make your own the make to have a similar taper as the original
bell so you will not get the muffled effect of a straight tube. Make it
longer than you think necessary then gradually cut some off the end
until it is in tune.

He's at Indiana University, with Howard Klug et. al., and I know the
work has been performed there. Perhaps if Howard Klug is still reading
the list he could tell us how they did it?
