Thank you all for the help with this problem - and the Awful Warnings about
cracking - I hope I'll be able to sleep tonight...

The "orange peel in the case" solution intrigues me. I have seen it
recommended before on the list but I thought it was a sort of urban myth.
What particular characteristics does orange peel have which make it such a
good humidifier ? How much should one put ? How often should one change
it ? Does it make the clarinet smell ? I suppose controlled experiments
will teach me. (Put too little - the instrument will crack. Put too much -
it will swell up and I won't be able to assemble it. One will soon learn).

I shall start tonight but it will have to be tangerine peel.
