Years ago, a clarinet teacher suggested that for cold sores, fever blisters,
and other lesions in the mouth to take the amino acid, L-Lysine, 500 mg,
with breakfast for a few days. It would help the sore spots heal faster.
(My MD confirmed that it did work -- probably better than the $35, 1/10th
ounce tube of evil-tasting ointment.) I've used it ever since. Most of the
time, by the next day, I can tell an improvement. The sore is usually
completely gone in 3-5 days. My grandkids are trained that when they have
one coming on, they immediately ask for the Lysine. It works for them. The
stuff is readily available at health food stores and pharmacies. Actually,
we usually buy it in bottles of 400 from Costco, when we have a reason to
stop there.

(Usual disclaimer: I'm not offering medical advise. This works for me.
Your mileage may vary.)
