I have been curious about this subject, too, although not to record myself.

I have been looking at the portable minidisc recorders Marantz PMD-650 and
the HHB MDP500 and also the DAT recorders Sony TCD-D10 and Tascam
DA-P1. While I believe the DAT recorders have much higher list prices than
the minidiscs, used ones sell for about the same amount on eBay as the
minidiscs, around $900.

After capturing we would want to output to a computer.

I would be interested in opinions on the relative merits of these systems.
