Hi Jim,
It all depends on how much your willing to spend as to which minidisc
unit you end up buying. There are many, many units all with different
features, and they are also at different prices... just take a look at
http://www.minidisc.org/portable_table.html to see what I mean! I own an old
Sony unit which records very well only that you cannot change the recording
levels once you have started recording. I believe in the newer models this
has changed though... If you are looking for recording quality as a big
factor the unit is not the biggest consideration, the microphone is. I
bought a Sony because I knew that I was also going to buy a Sony Microphone
and I wanted brands to match.
My mini-disc player is now 4-years old and when i bought it was $800
(aus), now you can get the same model for around $290. It is regarded as the
'el-cheapo' of mini-disc recorders but the sound is still fabulous because I
have an expensive microphone.
I have blabbed on for a fair bit so I'd better provide at least a little
bit of useful information! ;) My biggest advice is that you get loads of
opinions, find out what other musicians use, their is heaps of information
on the web so gather all you can find use http://www.minidisc.org as a
starting point.
I hope you have success in finding what works right for you! As a
student, mini-discs are a fantastic resource. I record myself on a monthly
basis to monitor my progress and I now have recordings over a three year
period. It's quite fun to listen back three years and say to myself "Is that
how I played three years ago!!"
I wish you luck and success!

Ben
p.s: make sure you get one with a rec. input. There are Mini-disc Players
(that play only) and Recorders (that record and play!)
