The only advice I can really give is to try out a
number of different clarinets of all brand models and
types in order to find the best one, just taking the
first one sent to you (trust me, until I moved to
Montreal that was the only choice I had) is not too
efficient. The Buffet E-xx series is actually quite
nice and they continue making improvements on the
mechanism over there (my E-11 A, a couple years newer
than the Bb is quite a bit nicer). In terms of tone
they are excellent, although there is some variation
between each of them. Generally, an E-12 would last
you until college at least, I've been playing my E-11
since 9th grade high school, and i'm at the McGill
Faculty of Music now so I'd say it's treated me well!
I wouldn't mind an R-13, but preferably used (at the
discretion of my bank account)...but there's nothing
wrong with the E-xx series if you invest in a good
setup.

Oh, and if you do happen to get the E-xx series, get a
new barrel...for some reason they ship them with quite
short barrels and you may end up sharp.

So...the point of all of this...try out a couple, and
don't just take the one sent to you. The model isn't
as important as you think, but given the chance, i'd
go for the R-13. If it's going to be a long hassle,
you could keep the E and save up for something else
later in life. :-)

Best of luck,
Mark
