I can't find a reference to the E-12 in the French catalogues (I live in
France), but there is a C-12 - also called the "Conservatoire" model, which
would be a step up from "student" model (but that's just marketing names
anyway). Maybe the E-12 and the C-12 are the same things renamed for
different markets. Or maybe the E-12 has an R-13 bore for the American
market and the C-12 has an RC bore for the French market. I suppose they
may have lower quality keywork or something to explain the difference in
price.

Now I have been advised by a professional teacher who ought to know that the
C-12 is a very good instrument. The major objection (which is why I didn't
buy one) is that there is no A clarinet to match.

That's an awful lot of "ifs" and doubtful hypotheses, but it's just to say
that if you did decide to keep the E-12 it might prove to be a very
acceptable choice. Were you able to try it ? Or maybe even more important,
was your teacher able to try it ?
