Natalie, your reasoning for wanting an R-13 is sound. Many , if not most, top
level professional play them for good reason, and it will last you well beyond
college with good care. Regarding the restocking fee, it may help if your
mother insists that she DID order an R-13 (it's pretty hard for your mom to
have heard you wrong and mentally gotten from R-13 to hearing E-12, especially
if you originally never even discussed the E-12. How would your mom have even
known such a model existed?) Perhaps the manager of the store would waive the
restocking fee if you ordered the R-13? If none of that works, the real
question here is how to pay for the R-13, and when you will get it. Since
you're sounding so serious and mature about wanting a high quality instrument,
how about you paying the extra costs involved? Your mother obviously did her
best to get you what you needed and she shows a lot of love for you by saying
she doesn't want you to "settle". Can you work to pay off the extra cost a
little bit at a time? Do you have a savings account which could help a bit?
Can you do extra chores around the house to earn extra money? Also, someone
else in your school or in a local Grade school might be delighted to get a
brand new E-12. You could advertise in a local paper, talk to Grade school
band directors and see what happens. Even if you sold it for a bit less than
you paid for it, it wouldn't be as much as a $200 loss. Of course the other
alternative is to keep the E-12 and start, saving up to buy an R-13 after H.S.
graduation or as soon as you can.

I hope this helps a bit. Good luck!

Audrey
