There are lots of works worth mentioning...but I have
to cast my vote for John Harbison's 1982 variations
for clarinet, violin, and piano. In my opinion, this
beautiful work stands with Bartok's Contrasts as one
of the great works for that ensemble. It's filled
with tricky ensemble problems (e.g., one movement is a
canon spaced one sixteenth note apart) but is well
worth the study.
