I often use half-glasses when I play. I can see the conductor much better
(which is sometimes unfortunate) than I can when I wear full-sized reading
glasses. I've also used bifocals, which work OK. What I have never been able
to use for music are progressive lenses. They are wonderful for ordinary
vision, but for music the area of the lens that produces a sharp image is
too limited at the distance I normally keep my music stand. I don't see far
enough ahead of where I'm playing to be able to "think ahead," which makes
sight-reading in particular with progressives out of the question for me.

Even better, for my money, are contact lenses. I normally play using bifocal
contacts, which work well unless the accidentals are very small or light
(sharps and naturals look dangerously similar if you aren't seeing
completely clearly) under which condition I add half-glasses with a very
weak additional prescription. Sometimes I play instead with a pair of
distance-only single refraction lenses along with standard half-frame
reading glasses I buy from the local pharmacy.

Lots of ways to go.
