Larry,

I use magnifiers to offset my aging near vision. Just for reference, I use
1.50 diopter for reading, 1.25 for computer work and 1.00 for all music
reading. I find that the 1s work fine for solo practice as well as large
ensemble work.

Personally, I found half lenses, even those without frames, to be
unsatisfactory due to the sight-line interference created by the top edge as
I looked up to check out an especially critical cue.
Magnifiers of 1:00 diopter allow me clear music reading and an adequate view
of the conductor.

I can't comment on bifocals, although I know some use them.
