Ben,
Good data backup software for CDs has ECC codes added for error detection &
correction. A read after write (bit by bit compare) is a base level
operation and is an option on even the cheapest backup software (no hardware
needed!). CD & DVD media is used extensively in the computer industry for
archival backups.
