On the Mac, under OS 9, click the Apple menu, select Control Panels,
select Software Update, and click Update Now.

Under OS X, click the Apple Menu, select System Preferences. Click on
the Software Update icon and click Update Now.

I've only ever seen one security update for the Mac and that was to
patch a hole discovered in the BSD framework under OS X.

Mark's instructions for updating Win 98 also apply to Windows 2000 and I
suspect to Windows Me as well. Usually Microsoft lists all the security
updates at the top under "Critical Updates".

I think that the first time you run Windows Update it may ask you to
download and install a small application. What this app does is take
some information on updates from Microsoft and compare it against your
computer's installed software to determine which updates are relevant
for your system.

If you are interested in Internet security issues, I highly recommend
the site www.grc.com.
