If you're running Windows 98 or above you should have a selection under the
Start menu that says "Windows Update". When you're online & connected to the
Internet, click that button. It'll take you to the Microsoft Update page.
Click on Product Updates. That'll check your machine and then present a list
of "suggested" updates. At the very least install all the security patches.

There's a similar thing on my Mac (I haven't turned the Mac boot part on for
a while - I run Linux on it mostly - so I don't remember the exact steps)
and the newer versions of RedHat Linux have the program up2date which will
download & install patches and updates. Mandrake Linux has something
similar, as does SuSE. I don't know about the others.
