The story which stands out in my mind is something that happened in a
lesson while I was in my second year at Temple.
Whenever the phone would ring during a lesson, Mrs. Gigliotti would
answer it, so our lesson wouldn't be interrupted. One day, the phone
rang, and Mrs. G called up the stairs, "Anthony, it's so and so" (I
forget the name) He said to me, "I have to take this call; it's very
important. If it's a long call, we'll reschedule your lesson." They
start talking about the weather, the Phillies, and other general
chatting; not a very important conversation on the surface. After about
ten minutes, they hang up, and Mr. G explained: That's a former student
from about ten years ago. During his freshman year, his entire family
was killed in a car accident. He snapped, and has been in an institution
ever since. I'm his only touch wih reality, so whenever he calls, we'll
talk about whatever he wants for as long as he wants. I will always make
time for him."
This made an incredible impression on me. Even though this occurred 20
years ago, I still remember it as if it were last week. I think that
this may have impacted my life more than anything musical that he taught
me. He was a dear man, and I'll miss him.
Chris
