Would it also be accurate to say that mass influences HOW the performer
plays? (as opposed to his or her perception of what comes out of the
horn)

That is, a heavier instrument may cause the performer to (perhaps
unconsciously) supply more breath support, more legato, etc.

I suspect that I use a rounder embouchure and cavity when I play my
wooden clarinet (vs. my plastic clarinet) because, somehow, I 'feel'
that the heavier instrument requires them. Obviously these things
affect tone.
