After I posted, I got to thinking:

(a) could I define "real music"? Presumably you could find a few bars
in the most lyrical of pieces that wouldn't sound musical to me if I
heard them out of context.

(b) why do the 'decorations' in a cartoon strip make a difference in the
first place? Is Charlie Brown any more/less enjoyable if his
"Beethoven" isn't really Beethoven?

(c) if I were more talented, I wouldn't need to play it in order to know
(merely by reading) if it was musical.
