>I do not know whether Mr Rendall has any factual evidence to back up his
assertion, but there as been at least one academic research project which
concluded that, under controlled conditions, the body material has no effect
on
a clarinet's tone. I, personally, have found that to be true (which is why
I
continue to favor my plastic Vito), although my experience is significantly
more limited than others on this list.

I think the mouthpiece & reed setup that you use has a far more significant
impact on tone than the material of the instrument. I just started playing
a wood clarinet (Buffet) this past summer after having played a plastic
Bundy for about 40 years. I definitely notice a difference in tone but not
as much of a difference as I would have expected. When doing a blind test
with my family they can hear the difference easily when I switch mouthpieces
but have difficulty telling the difference between instruments.

Of course with the difference in playability and the relative ease of
playing in tune, I absolutely love my new (to me) clarinet.
