Neil,

If you think that braces would affect your playing enough to warrant
the extra cost, braces can now be installed on the backs of the
teeth. Ask your orthodontist about this option, as well as the
smaller "invisible" or "white" braces. One added benefit of having
had braces is the retainer that you must wear only at night
eventually. It reduces or eliminates any shifting of the teeth due to
the pressure of the mouthpiece pushing your top and bottom teeth.

I'll add another dental related comment. If you are experiencing any
pain in your teeth from mouthpiece pressure and you are already using
a mouthpiece patch, it just might be an indication that your angle or
jaw position is somewhat off. I've made some slight adjustments in
these areas during the past three months and I've noticed that
pressure pain in my top front teeth has been eliminated. Just as one
shouldn't continue practising when their hands or arms ache, this
applies to teeth (and back, and shoulders, and throat...)

And one more thing, brush and floss regularly! Use a soft toothbrush,
don't brush too hard. And avoid soft drinks and acidic drinks.
Although my dentist has reminded me to brush and floss, I wasn't
cautioned so much about the others. Ask your dentist next time you're
in for your 6 month checkup. Without our teeth we would all be
playing double lip. <shudder>
