I wonder whether the wording of point b.) above doesn't give away the whole
secret to what is at work here. These mass changes may affect the
PERFORMER'S perception of sound and response, but the listener is too far
away to hear the differences. Not that the differences are then
unimportant, since they will affect what the player does in response to
them, but the acoustical differences themselves will still be too faint in
relation to the total sound to be heard by anyone else.
