If it could be proven that there actually WAS a difference, but it was not
discernable by the human ear, then the difference would be meaningless.

That is evidence that that it sounds different. It does not address the
reason WHY at all. It is at least as likely to be caused by subtle
differences in the dimensions as the material, but without measurable,
repeatable experimentation, who is to know?

I sometimes DO play a crystal mouthpiece, and it does sound different from
others I have, but I do not believe the material is the reason, but rather
the internal dimensions. I always joke that it has a "clear" sound, but,in
fact, its most significant characteristic is a lack of projection in the
chalumeau. Of course I can't prove anything, either.
