Subj: [kl] bore's effect on tone
Date: Thu, 6 Dec 2001 17:10:53 -0500

Tony Wakefield asked "Which does have the bigger influence on tone? Is it
bore size or is it wood?"

I'm ignorant but happened to have just read something about this. Check out
Stephen Fox's site sfoxclarinets.com and you'll find a paper on practical
clarinet acoustics which discusses bore effect on tone. Apparently the shape
of the bore has more effect that it's diameter while tone hole size, shape,
etc. are very critical factors as well. Undercut tone holes tend to darken
the sound. Unfortunately, the effects of different woods is not discussed
but intuitively must have great effect as well.
