I don't have an exact answer to your question, and I had the same reaction
you did, but it's important to read the article carefully. It states that
his tenure with the Philadelphia Orchestra is believed to be the longest
of any *principal* clarinetist with an orchestra in the nation. Drucker
may have been with the NY Phil for 53 years to date (joined at the age of
19), but if my memory is correct, he did not join the orchestra as prin-
cipal clarinetist. That didn't happen until a few years later. However
I can't remember exactly when the appointment occurred. For some reason,
the number 21 comes to mind which, if correct, still makes him the longest
tenured principal clarinetist in the nation, not Gigliotti. Does anybody
know at what age Drucker was appointed principal?
