But why should this improvisation surprise you in the slightest? For
the last 10 years on on this list, I have consistently said that the
performance practice up to roughly 1820 (no one hung out a sign to stop
doing it on a specific day), was to encourage performer improvisation
under a variety of reasonably well-defined conditions. Beethoven fell
into that period, so did Schubert, and certainly so did Mozart.

To this day I will ask a conductor if he or she would object to me
improvising in performances of the Mozart Requiem, the Gran Partitta,
etc. Some object. Others don't.

Zinman is right on the money and he is lucky to have a performer who can
do it effectively.
