Dear David,
When I was fourteen, around 1960, my clarinet teacher in Tampa got
me into the Tampa Philharmonic and St. Petersburg Symphony, plus the
Florida Sun Coast Opera, all playing 2nd clarinet. In the summertime I
went to music camps and played principal clarinet at the Brevard Music
Center. By the time I got to Oberlin, I felt that I had it made. But
something happenned that I really don't know how to explain. I started
yawning in some of my rehearsals, and for some reason, it just didn't
seem to be as much fun as it had when I was fourteen.
What I am leading up to is that I did not end up in an orchestra.
When I was younger I didn't have enough sense to get nervous at
auditions, especially if I didn't have any competition. When I got
older, I felt very annoyed and desperate with 4 to 5 hundred
clarinetists ready to kick my ass at any given audition. I was a
wonderful improvizer and I love to perform, so I went in a totally
different direction, jazz and popular music. I lasted for about 30
years, and most of the time I made over $30,000 a year. Things slowed
down a little bit in the 90's, but then I got married to a guy with a
"real" job, and I bummed off of him for a very short time.
Anyhow, there are other things to do than play in an orchestra.
ANNIE
