I have a question to put out to the high school band directors on the
list. I teach a group of 12 clarinet students every week for half an
hour each at a local private high school. After about a month
teaching them I realised that they didn't bring their instruments
home to practice. Is this normal for a band director to not encourage
or make home practice mandatory? I have given them all a weekly
practice grid to fill out, but it is hard for me to explain this new
requirement to them when they are accustomed to arriving at band
class without any preparation and still given good grades in the
course. Assuming your schools require home practice, how do you grade
this and how do your students report their practice to you? Should I
suggest that the band director implement mandatory home practice for
all of the students?
