I guess I must be the weird kid because I always liked to practice. I like
the suggestions that everyone is giving to keep the daughter playing the
clarinet, but let me give you some information from a kid on the "other
side". In junior high our bands weren't divided much by ability, but more
by age. It killed me, and other students I'm sure, to be surrounded by
players who didn't care what they sounded like, or didn't care about their
instrument, or complained about the class all the time. When I asked and of
these students why they are even taking band all of them said their parents
made them take it. My own parents tried to do the same thing with my
younger brother until I told them that this is putting the serious students
at an advantage. It's not too fun being a band full of kids that think it
is either stupid, or an easy A on their report cards.
