Playing a musical instrument constantly forces me to challenge myself and leave
my "comfort zone." Often, I'll look at a piece of music for the first time -
something we're playing in the orchestra, or a lesson assignment - and think to
myself, "I'll never be able to play this no matter how hard I try." The thing
is, if I work diligently at it, I usually do end up being able to play it. It's
a constant reminder to me that I can achieve much more than I think I'm capable
of.

But there are times when I can't seem to "get it," no matter how much I try.
>From these failures, I've learned that I don't need to be 100% perfect all the
time to be liked and accepted. I've screwed up pretty spectacularly at times,
and the audience has yet to throw rotten tomatos at me. :-)

Finally - this might sound corny, but I'll say it anyway - I feel like my
clarinet is a friend that will stick with me through the very good times and the
truly awful times. When I'm feeling overjoyed, I can express some of that in my
playing. And when things aren't going well, playing the clarinet is not only an
emotional outlet, it's a reminder that no matter what happens, there will always
be a source of enjoyment and pleasure in my life. A lot of bad things could
happen to me that I don't have a lot of control over, but no one can ever stop
me from picking up my clarinet.
