My first reaction also would have been to try double lip. It is difficult to
learn properly as the upper lip must not be passive if its strength is to
improve. Is the position of his jaw the same in both types of embouchure? The
double embouchure sometimes brings the jaw forward to a better position. If
so, try to ensure that the new jaw position is maintained with the single lip
embouchure.
