Ben, you could make sure that he does realize what he is doing.
2 ways to do that:
1: Put some tape on his face from a little below the ear covering the jaw and up on the other side (have him set his embo=
uchure first)
2: have him hold his barrel and tongue on an open G while putting his finger in his ear (he will feel the jaw movement pr=
etty clearly).

Would using a small mirror on the stand help also?

Also have him try to tongue 16ths on an open G. It is a lot harder to move the jaw while tonguing quickly then slowly, so=
that will also help him feel what not moving the jaw is all about.
